Welcome back to LNG4U — your weekly read on what’s shaping the LNG market.
We start with a perspective to keep you ahead, then walk through the developments setting the pace — from price momentum to offshore activity.
Let’s dive in.
🎓 LNGKnowledge
If LNG is spilled on to a steel cargo deck , or over the side of a ship constructed of mild steel ❌, it will cool the steel down 📉to a temperature well below the temperature of the liquid by evaporation and thermal cooling.
When large spills are involved it can be catastrophic as it takes only small subsequent blow when brittle to result in fracture of the ship's hull or deck 🛑.

🏭 LNGTerminals
Spain’s Reganosa has lined up a new job at a future liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in Senegal, Africa 🏭. As a result, the firm will supervise the construction of this LNG facility in Dakar.
The LNG terminal, to be developed in the port of Dakar, was initially conceived as a comprehensive infrastructure with a floating storage unit with a capacity of 137,000 cubic meters of LNG 💧, a quay with mooring systems and onshore regasification facilities

Germany’s private operator of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, Deutsche ReGas, has secured the go-ahead for the permanent operation 🎯 of an energy terminal in Mukran with two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) using onboard gas generators.
The granted permit amendment is perceived to transform this operating arrangement from a temporary to a permanent permit 📅. Deutsche ReGas claims that this energy concept has proven successful in ongoing operations, as the permitted limits, particularly noise limits, are being met 📊.

Some of the world’s largest LNG plants were forced shut on Friday by a cyclone off western Australia 🌪, squeezing fuel supplies already stretched thin by war in the Middle East.
Energy giant Chevron said it suffered outages at its Gorgon and Wheatstone gas plants 🚨, which collectively supply more than five percent of the world’s liquefied natural gas.
Fuel company Woodside said its Karratha plant, which processes fuel from one of the world’s biggest offshore gas operations, had also fallen offline 🔴.
The cyclone had come at the “worst time”, warning that even a minor hit to output could ripple through global markets 📊.

Libyan authorities have reportedly taken control of the damaged Russian LNG carrier Arctic Metagaz 🎯, boarding the vessel and securing it to a tug as efforts intensify to prevent a potential environmental disaster off the country’s coast.
The vessel is believed to have suffered significant structural damage, with two of its four LNG tanks potentially still intact. How much gas remains onboard is unclear, raising concerns about a possible release 🚨
The Arctic Metagaz was hit by a massive explosion earlier this month after a reported strike by a Ukrainian drone 🚀 while transiting the Mediterranean with cargo from Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project.

Russia is expanding its LNG dark fleet, with three 20-year-old LNG carriers recently sold to a newly formed company in Turkey and two subsequently reflagged to Sierra Leone 🤝 – a registry that has become a flagging hub of choice for sanctioned Russian-linked tonnage
The three vessels have yet to signal any post-sale cargo destination. Two are currently sailing in ballast around the Cape of Good Hope, while the third is anchored off Galle, Sri Lanka 🌎

Flex LNG has landed a new charter deal for its LNG carrier Flex Aurora, locking in fresh employment 🤝 just weeks after the vessel came off its previous contract.
The 2020-built vessel has been fixed to a supermajor for a firm period of two years, with options that could stretch the deal to as much as eight years in total 📅.
If all extension options are exercised, the vessel could remain on hire until 2034. The deal lifts Flex LNG’s contract backlog to a minimum of 55 years 📈, rising to 82 years if all optional periods across the fleet are taken up 📈.

ABB has upgraded propulsion systems across a fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers (LNGCs) owned and operated by Cool Company (CoolCo) 🚢.
ABB has upgraded the frequency converters as part of the propulsion systems of CoolCo’s nine LNG carriers, which is perceived to enhance reliability across the fleet 🏭. The propulsion drive upgrade extends the vessels’ operational lifetime by more than ten years, while minimizing dry dock time 📉.

TotalEnergies made a decision not to declare force majeure to any of its liquefied natural gas customers 🤝, and that it would respect all the LNG contracts in terms of price and volume 💧.
Qatar, the world's biggest LNG producer, has declared force majeure on all of its LNG output after being attacked 🚨.
Analysts estimate TotalEnergies takes 5.2 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) 💧 from its share of the QatarEnergy LNG trains.
Shell, the world's biggest LNG trader, had declared force majeure on cargoes it buys from QatarEnergy and sells on ❌. Analysts estimate Shell takes 6.8 mtpa of Qatari LNG.

🎬 LNGVideos
Inside the damage — Arctic Metagaz
In this video, you can clearly see the cargo tank opening, with visible damage to the GTT containment system and even the cargo pump tower exposed, something we almost never see on an LNG carrier.
For context, this vessel built in 2003 and known for decades of safe LNG operations was not lost due to technical failure. As shared in my previous posts, she was struck during a conflict-related incident in the Mediterranean, despite being a commercial LNG carrier with crew onboard.
What’s striking is that even after the impact and severe structural damage, the vessel remained afloat for a long time, highlighting the robustness of LNG ship design.
