After discharging her cargo, the LNG ship shipboard management team considers a number of basic objectives to complete during the Ballast voyage 🔵.

These are the main objectives for SMT consideration :

  • Cold conditioning of the cargo tanks, resulting in the best possible cold state on arrival at the load port 🌎 while optimising the use of the LNG boil-off from the retained heel.

  • Maintain cargo tank pressures within maker's recommendations, ie cargo tank pressure on a membrane ship above 70 mbarG or 1083 mbarA at all times. This avoids exposing the membrane to unacceptable levels of fatigue stress 🚨.

  • Completion of any potentially disruptive planned/unscheduled maintenance 🚧.

  • With operator approval, completion of any cosmetic maintenance 🏢 that is in or adjacent to a gas- dangerous zone .

  • Completion of Engine Room maintenance on the ship's power plant 🏭, which has the potential for blackout, loss of way through the water or delay to the schedule .

  • Completion of any alarm or trip tests 🚨 that could disrupt the schedule.
