🎓 LNGKnowledge

The membrane cargo containment system is based on a 👉 very thin primary barrier or "membrane" that is supported by a layer of insulation 🚧 within the confines of the hull of the ship.

The membrane system differs from the moss type tanks in that the membrane containment system must be provided with a complete secondary barrier to ensure cargo integrity in the event of leakage of the primary barrier 🚨.

There are two 2️⃣ principal types of membrane system in common use, both named after the companies who developed them, 1️⃣ Gaz Transport and 2️⃣ Technigaz, these companies have now merged 🤝 to create Gaz Transport Technigaz GTT.

EXMAR awarded FLNG marine operations and maintenance contract by Cedar LNG 🤝

Cedar, majority-owned by Haisla Nation, in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corporation, represents the world’s first Indigenous majority-owned LNG facility 🥇, powered by renewable electricity, making it one of the lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities in the world.

Located in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada, within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, Cedar’s FLNG is currently under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries 🏗.

XRG has confirmed the signing of a joint development agreement with YPF and Eni 🤝 to advance the Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) large-scale project designed to develop 12 million tons per year (mtpa) of LNG capacity 💧 and support Argentina’s emergence as a long-term global LNG supplier.

The $50 billion Argentina LNG project entails gas production, processing, transportation, and liquefaction for export through two 2️⃣ floating gas liquefaction units (FLNG) with a capacity of 6 mtpa.

Libyan tanker and gas carrier demand looks set to rise 📈 after the war-torn country awarded its first exploration licences in nearly two decades.

Big names QatarEnergy, Chevron and Eni have taken blocks 🎯 as investors move back in to revitalise exports.

Libya’s National Oil Corp (NOC) announced the winners of its first 🥇 bidding round since 2007.

Cook Inlet LNG, a subsidiary of Louisiana-based Gardes Holdings, plans to install a FSRU 🚢 in Alaska’s Cook Inlet to address projected gas shortages in Southcentral Alaska.

The project, developed with Glacier Oil & Gas, will use an FSRU moored to the existing Osprey platform, leveraging current infrastructure and supplying up to 22 bcf of gas per year 💭, with minimal new construction.

First gas is expected in mid-2029, with LNG cargo deliveries every 30–45 days in winter 📅, and the project is privately funded pending regulatory approvals.⁣⁣⁣

🚢 LNGShips

At least 13 of the 98 LNG carrier newbuildings scheduled for handover in 2026 currently have no employment in what is set to be a record year for deliveries.

This compares with 79 deliveries and just one uncommitted LNG vessel last year 📅.

There are also 13 modern vessels redelivering to owners 🚫 this year.

LNG shipowner GasLog Partners has recorded a $35.4m write-down on the value 💵 of its last remaining steam turbine vessel and three tri-fuel diesel-electric ships.

It recognised an aggregate non-cash impairment loss on the four ships 📉, explaining that the indicators for this were the current low market rates and the differences between the ship brokers’ valuations of its owned fleet and their carrying values.

The lone steamship is the 145,000-cbm Methane Rita Andrea 🚢 (built 2006). The company did not name the TFDE ships.

Flex LNG is not planning to order LNG carrier newbuildings at today’s prices with the long-term rates at their current levels

Newbuilding prices for a two-stroke vessel today are about 💰250m, with the benchmark for a 10-year time charter at roughly 💰85,000 per day.

That’s not really a good investment 🚫 for a shipowner as per chief executive Marius Foss.

🏗 LNGShipbuilding

QatarEnergy is expected to move forward with a third tranche of LNG carrier newbuildings 🚀 under its massive shipbuilding project as the company grows out its access to modern tonnage.

Plans are being developed for Phase 3 of the project. But parallel analysis in play regarding the disposal of older tonnage .

💧 LNGBunkering

A Shell-chartered LNG bunker vessel has been damaged by containers falling from a boxship 🚨, which it was refuelling.

Seven empty containers fell from Hapag-Lloyd’s 23,664-teu Bangkok Express (built 2025) onto the aft deck of Korea Line’s 18,137-cbm LNGBV K Lotus (built 2022) in the Netherlands 📍.

Incident temporarily halted boxship refuelling operations in Dutch terminal

Lloyd’s Register has handed approval in principle (AiP) to GTT for its new CUBIQ LNG fuel containment system 🎯, a cubic tank design aimed at widening the use of membrane tanks in LNG-fuelled vessels 🔥.

GTT’s CUBIQ design takes a different approach to LNG containment. Its near-cubic shape removes the traditional upper and lower chamber arrangement found in many membrane systems.

The design aims to improve volumetric efficiency. By making better use of available space, the system can free up room onboard for additional cargo 📈, a key consideration for commercial operators.⁣⁣⁣

GSX Energy — a tie-up between SeaKapital, China’s Seacon Shipping and Greek owner Golden Union — has returned to 🤝 Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co (CIMC SOE) for two 2️⃣ LNG bunker vessel newbuildings.

The price for the 20,000-cbm LNGBVs has yet to emerge, but brokers peg them at between $85m and 💰90m each.

🔥 LNGAsFuel

A.P. Moller – Maersk is enlarging its fleet by placing an order for the construction of eight 8️⃣ 18,600 TEU large vessels with China’s New Times Shipbuilding.

The ships will be equipped with dual-fuel engines able to operate on conventional bunker fuel or liquified gas 🔥.

The Danish giant now has 33 vessels on order, with four scheduled for delivery in the remainder of 2026 🎊.

The maritime industry’s energy transition is no longer a distant ambition - it is a present-day reality.

With LNG-powered vessels ordered in 2025 accounting for 79% of alternative-fueled tonnage, up from 67% in 2024 🚀, the LNG-powered global fleet both operating and on-order, including LNG carriers, today represents 10% of the global fleet 📊 by dead weight tonnage.

From a niche solution used by vessels in Northern Europe and the Americas in 2016, today, LNG 💧is a globally utilized mainstream marine fuel. Its energy density, availability, lower costs of regulatory compliance and commercial optionality give it an advantage over other alternative marine fuels 🏆.
